Adventitious Roots | |
Aerial Root Nub | The start of an aerial root. |
Aerial Root | (A type of adventitious root) The roots a plant puts out above the soil for the purpose of climbing |
Apex | Leaf tip |
Apical (or terminal) Growth | This is the growth found at the very top of your plant and will emerge in a cataphyll attached to your most recent petiole. |
Areole | The tiny bumps that grow into clusters of cacti spines. |
Axil | The angle formed by where the petiole meets the stem. |
Axillary (or lateral) Bud | A raised bump on the stem by each node - often hidden by a petiole. Axillary buds are found on lower nodes (rather than the top - your apical growth) and on many houseplants will only become activated if the plant is chopped above or below the node it is present on. |
Cataphyll | A modified leaf which lacks a blade and in appearance corresponds to a petiolesheath; may be used to describe other leaf types whose technical names are defined by positionrather than form, e.g., prophylls are usually of cataphyll shape in Araceae, compare, prophyll. |
Cataphyll | A modified leaf that lacks a blade |
Dicots | Produces two seed leaves. On Dicots, each node produces two leaves on either side. |
Epiphyte | Plants that can absorb nutrients & moisture through the air. |
Extrafloral Nectaries | |
Fenestration | |
Fibrous | |
Inflorescence | |
Internode | The area on the stem between two nodes. |
Leaf Blade (or Lamina) | Includes the apex, margin, veins, and midrib. |
Leaf | |
Margin | The outer edges of a leaf. |
Mid Cutting | |
Midrib | The central vein of a leaf. |
Monocots | Produces a single seed leaf. On Monocots, each new leaf emerges from the center of the plant. Ex. Monstera, Philodendrons, Dieffenbachia, Calathea, Alocasia, |
New Growth | |
Node | Raised ring around the stem wherethe petiole meets. Nodes contain everything needed to form new growth or to propagate a new plant! |
Offset (or Plantlet) | |
Peduncle | |
Petiolar Sheath | Part of the stem. |
Petiole | The 'leaf-stem' that connects the leaf blade to the node on the main stem. |
prophyll | the first leaf of a branch (or sympodial unit); in Araceae almost always a 2-keeledcataphyll, often confused with cataphyll; cataphyll refers to a particular type of morphology(reduced leaf), prophyll refers to the position of the leaf along a branch. |
Pup | |
Rhizome | |
Root | Anchors the plant and absorbs water and nutrients. |
Runner | A leafless vine with nodes. |
Slit | |
Stem | The main part of the plant that supports the roots and all other growth. |
Sulcate Canal | |
Taproot | |
Top Cutting | |
Veins | Channels that support and transport water & nutrients. |
Venules | The smallest veins--- |
