Adventitious Roots

Apical (or terminal) Growth
This is the growth found at the very top of your plant and will emerge in a cataphyll attached to your most recent petiole.
Areole
The tiny bumps that grow into clusters of cacti spines.
Axil
The angle formed by where the petiole meets the stem.
Axillary (or lateral) Bud
A raised bump on the stem by each node - often hidden by a petiole. Axillary buds are found on lower nodes (rather than the top - your apical growth) and on many houseplants will only become activated if the plant is chopped above or below the node it is present on.
Cataphyll
A modified leaf which lacks a blade and in appearance corresponds to a petiolesheath; may be used to describe other leaf types whose technical names are defined by positionrather than form, e.g., prophylls are usually of cataphyll shape in Araceae, compare, prophyll.
